Cyril is a Vietnamese potbellied pig who started life at Harewood unlike any other! Abandoned over the estate wall, he has found his forever home with us at Harewood. He’s loved by all the staff and those that come to visit him. Make sure you say hi if you walk past his field. He even comes when his name is called!

Originating from the Island of St Kilda in Scotland, our Hebredean sheep are believed to be one of the oldest flocks in the country. The tup of the pack is called Centaur after the half-man / half-horse figure from Greek Mythology. Hebredean / Charollais cross are bred for their excellent meat, check with our reception to see if we have any for sale during your stay.

Our Highland Cattle herd are called the ‘Harewood Fold’ named after their home. Some of the herd are also named after their location including two of this year’s calves: Neoinean Lady of Harewood and Iseabel Ruadh 3rd of Harewood. These two calves will now stay with the herd and produce their own calves in a few years. Make sure you pop by and see these incredibly beautiful creatures.

Our Aberdeen Angus herd are named after Gawthorpe Hall which was the original hall at Harewood before it was replaced in 1771 by the house that stands before us today. You can still see the remains of the original hall in the ground.

Every member of the herd is named after the hall including to name a few: Gawthorpe Annie, Gawthorpe Duchess Diana and Gawthorpe Princess Margaret. Bob, who is 8 years old, is the most well-known member of the herd as he was hand reared by the current Earl David Lascelles.

At Harewood we have approximately 250 Parkland Deer. Within these deer we have two species: approximately 150 Red Deer which are one of the largest deer species, and 100 Fallow Deer which can be identified by their spotted coat. The deer are especially magical to visit over the winter period, so make sure you come and see them if you stay in the colder months.

As part of a UK conservation initiative, Red Kites were released on the Harewood Estate in 1999 through a partnership with RSPB, English Nature and Yorkshire Water PLC. The initiative was a great success and at last count there were over 300 Red Kites in the area around Harewood and Yorkshire. Considering the species was persecuted to extinction in England and Scotland by the end of the 1800s, the Red Kite now has a self-sustaining population and numbers are gradually increasing year on year.

On the Harewood Estate is a river which is naturally a perfect spot to see a Heron or two if you stick around long enough. Sometimes, you can even spot an otter!
